Investment agreed on to upgrade seafront railings at the Cove in Greystones

At the April 2026 meeting of the Greystones Municipal District, Councillors agreed a €50,000 investment to upgrade the seafront railings around the Cove in Greystones. Cllr Louise Fenelon-Gaskin, Cllr Mark Barry, Cllr Lourda Scott & Cllr Stephen Stokes worked together to bring the issue forward. They believe that this will address growing safety concerns in this important area. They warmly welcomed the funding allocation.

Cllr Lourda Scott (Cathaoirleach of the Greystones Municipal District) stated: “I’ve been highlighting the condition of the railings at the Cove for quite a while now. In some areas, they are completely gone, which poses a real danger to the public. I’m very pleased to see this funding approved so we can begin making the area safe again.”

On the night, the funding proposal was tabled by Cllr Stephen Stokes and Cllr Lourda Scott. They received unwavering support from Cllr Mark Barry & Cllr Louise Fenelon-Gaskin. The funding will be allocated from the Councillors Discretionary Fund, which is financed through the Local Property Tax.

Cllr Fenelon-Gaskin added: “Our coastal amenities are hugely valued by the community, and it’s essential that they are properly maintained. I was very happy to support this investment, which will ensure the Cove remains a safe and welcoming space for all.”

In recent times, sections of the Cove have deteriorated significantly, with some areas now missing entire stretches of railings. This has created a serious safety hazard for residents and visitors alike, particularly given the exposed coastal conditions. Cllr Barry, Cllr Fenelon-Gaskin, Cllr Scott & Cllr Stokes also emphasised the urgency of the works.

Cllr Stephen Stokes remarked: “This is a critical safety investment. The Cove is one of Greystones’ most popular amenities. It has a special place in the heart of local residents. This issue is particularly vital to those with less mobility. This investment will allow us to restore the railings and better protect everyone who uses the area.”

Councillors Mark Barry, Stephen Stokes, Louise Fenelon-Gaskin & Lourda Scott highlighted the importance of maintaining public infrastructure like the railings in the Cove area. Works are expected to be progressed by the Council in the coming months, with a focus on restoring missing sections and upgrading existing railings to a safe and durable standard.

Cllr Mark Barry concluded: “This is a great example of councillors working together to address a clear local need. The use of the Discretionary Fund means we can respond decisively to issues like this, and I’m glad to back a project that will make such a visible and important difference.”
